Repayment policy has changed several times on paper over the past few years; far less has changed in practice. This explainer separates the two.
The short version: rule changes announced for this fall affect repayment plan enrollment windows and servicer communications. They do not change existing balances, and — a point that matters for much of BEW's readership — federal loan rules do not apply to international students, whose education financing runs through an entirely different, and less protected, set of channels. That parallel system is a story BEW will cover on its own.
